LOS GATOS, CA — Los Gatos Councilmember Marico Sayoc was named a 2022 Woman of the Year by the California State Legislature and California Legislative Women's Caucus.

Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Campbell) surprised Sayoc with the announcement during last week’s council meeting.

Sayoc served as mayor last year during several disruptive meetings that included verbal attacks at her and her family from public speakers. Low is co-authoring a bill along with state Sen. Dave Cortese (D-San Jose) that would crack down on disruptions in public meetings, stemming from the incidents at the Los Gatos meetings.

Low called Sayoc a “tireless community advocate, and it has been one heck of a year. We all know that.”

“But we grow stronger from this and we learn and we heal with deep dignity and a sense of grace,” Low said.

Sayoc said she was “grateful” despite not liking surprises.

“I just want to say thank you to everyone here,” Sayoc said. “We’re carving a path for women. I have the pleasure of working with strong women in Los Gatos.”

Los Gatos Mayor Rob Rennie said the award was “well-deserved,” and added that the town appreciated assistance from Low and other state legislators in dealing with the disruptive meetings.
