Residents Holding Rally In South Bay For Renter Protections

Residents will call for protections for renters and those living in mobile homes amid coronavirus outbreak at "Rolling Rally."

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA — A group of Mountain View residents will hold a so-called "rolling rally" Friday evening to call on city officials to enact protections during the novel coronavirus outbreak for renters and people who live in mobile homes and other vehicles.

Rally attendees will circle Mountain View City Hall in their vehicles to practice social distancing.

Rally organizers are calling on the city to go further than Santa Clara County's renter protections, which includes a 120-day grace period for missed rent payments.

"A 180-day payback period would support Mountain View working families more - rents in Mountain View are very high," Mountain View homeowner Gail Nyhan said.

The rally-goers will also encourage city officials to open more safe parking lots and add eviction protections for residents of the city's roughly 1,130 mobile homes, which are not included in the county's emergency ordinance.

"The vehicles who join today's rolling rally will be getting their message out with signs on their cars," Nyhan said.

"Some of the most important messages are simple -- homeless health is public health, and we are all at risk."

The rally is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the corner of Mercy and Bryant streets.
