Retail Cannabis Ban To Remain In Los Gatos

LOS GATOS, CA — Commercial cannabis will remain banned in Los Gatos after the town council declined to seek a ballot measure to tax cannabis businesses during a meeting Tuesday.

The question needed the support of four out of five councilmembers to appear on the ballot this November, but two councilmembers – Matthew Hudes and Mary Badame – voiced opposition during the meeting.

While marijuana is legal across California, cannabis for retail, manufacturing or cultivation is not allowed in Los Gatos as each municipality can enact its own regulations on cannabis.

Several Bay Area cities, including San Jose, Mountain View, Foster City and San Carlos have allowed for commercial cannabis operations.

The town received approval in January to hire a cannabis consultant to study the fiscal impacts of allowing commercial cannabis. In an informal Zoom poll conducted during a May community meeting, 55 percent of respondents believed that cannabis businesses should not be allowed in Los Gatos.

But, it appears the question won't be coming before residents in an official capacity anytime soon.
