SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA -- A house that started in the attic caused serious damage to the home before it was extinguished Saturday morning in the hills above unincorporated Los Gatos, the Santa Clara County Fire Department said.

Firefighters responded around 7 a.m. to a fire in the attic of the home in the 17000 block of Foster Road. Complicating things was that the home was located up a long driveway that was overgrown with vegetation and inaccessible to fire engines.

The resident of the home, an elderly male, was safely out of the home and uninjured when firefighters arrived. The home sustained major damage from the fire, which was brought under control at 9:13 a.m.

As firefighters battled the attic blaze, a vegetation fire started behind the home, but was quickly contained, according to the SCCFD.

"Under hotter, drier weather conditions," the fire department said in a statement, "this fire had potential to affect many of the nearby homes."
