SJ Mayor Halts Homeless Sweeps Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo didn't specify when the sweeps would resume

SAN JOSE, CA — San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo announced at the Santa Clara County's Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday that his city has enacted a temporary halt of abatements at homeless encampments due to concerns over the novel coronavirus, also referred to as COVID-19.

Liccardo did not specify how long the halt of sweeps would last.

The announcement came forward during the board's wide-ranging update on county services and precautions to mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus, which included updates from the county's law enforcement, supportive housing department, public health department and more.

By Tuesday, the county's confirmed cases of COVID-19 had gone up by two, bringing the total to 45.
