MALIBU, CA — Sixty three speeding citations were issued by California Highway Patrol officers to drivers on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu Saturday as part of a special enforcement operation, the CHP announced Thursday.

The CHP deployed four officers as part of the operation, which was aimed at reducing the risk of accidents on the busy highway and prompting public safety.

"The dedicated and proactive work of the CHP and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officers has significantly contributed to the enhancement of public safety on PCH, but the urgency of the situation is underscored by the alarming number of accidents and traffic violations we continue to see. There have been 11 accidents since that tragic day on Oct. 17, with one additional fatality. This trend is deeply concerning and demands immediate attention. I call on residents, businesses, and visitors to our city to exercise caution, obey traffic laws, and remain vigilant when driving this stretch of the highway,” Mayor Steve Uhring said in a statement.

The special enforcement operation comes about a month after Malibu secured a contract with the CHP to bring officers back to the stretch of PCH that runs through the city. The move was part of a series of responses following a PCH crash that killed four women in October.
