Artsy? And Love the Santa Monica Mountains? This Is for You

The National Park Service is accepting applications for an artist-in-residence program

From a press release:

Artists from all disciplines are invited to apply for an artist-in-residence program that seeks to connect young people to the Santa Monica Mountains.

“We’re specifically looking for ‘teaching artists,’ meaning they are a practicing artist who also engages the community in learning about the arts,” said Tori Kuykendall, a park ranger with Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. “Artists can be either established or emerging, but they must be passionate about using nature to inspire young people.”

Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, in partnership with the Santa Monica Mountains Fund, will select four artists and will provide a $2,750 stipend for a three-month term. Artists are required to host an exhibition or performance of either their work or the work created by youth involved in the project. The goal is to connect non-traditional and under-engaged visitors to public lands.

Applications must be submitted by Nov. 21. The online application, as well as more information about program requirements and past projects, can be found atwww.nps.gov/samo/supportyourpark/artist-in-residence.htm. Park Ranger Tori Kuykendall is also available to answer questions at 805-370-2325.

Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area launched its artist-in-residence program in 2014 with four artists working in mixed media, nature illustration, comic books and videography. That work will be showcased November 8 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Santa Monica Mountains Interagency Visitor Center (26876 Mulholland Hwy, Calabasas).
The artist-in-residence program is made possible by the Santa Monica Mountains Fund and a grant from the Metabolic Studio and the Annenberg Foundation.
