Chumash Ceremony to Honor Stephenie Glas

Chumash tribal member Mati Waiya will lead the ceremony at the Chumash Village in Malibu.

A special Chumash ceremony is set for later this month for LA City Firefighter Stephenie Glas, who died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound last month.

Glas, who was an outspoken proponent of the Malibu Lagoon Restoration and Enhancement Project and other issues in Malibu, will be honored at the 9 a.m. July 15 ceremony, according to organizer Cece Stein.

Chumash tribal member Mati Waiya will lead the ceremony at the Chumash Village at 33904 Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.

"They are celebrating her courage and her committment to her community," Stein said.

Glas started the Real Malibu 411 earlier this year, which a website dedicated to informing the community about issues unique to Malibu. Stein has since taken over the operation.

The ceremony, which will be followed by a paddle out, is open to the public. An RSVP is encouraged and can be made by emailing the realmalibu411@gmail.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wishtoyo Foundation in honor of Stephenie Glas at www.wishtoyo.org.
