DUI Checkpoint in Malibu Planned for This Weekend

The checkpoint is aimed at reducing the number of alcohol and drug related crashes in Malibu.

Deputies will hold a DUI checkpoint this weekend in Malibu.

The checkpoint is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 28 through 3:30 a.m. Saturday, June 29 at an undisclosed location within the Malibu city limits, according to Det. Richard Curry of the Malibu/Lost Hills Station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The operation is aimed at reducing the number of alcohol and drug related crashes. Deputies will also check drivers for proper licensing.

Curry said research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000, according to Curry.

Funding for this checkpoint was provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
