First Meeting Set for New Cultural Arts Commission

Commissioners will make recommendations to the Malibu City Council on cultural arts policy, the use of city parks for arts-related events, purchases of art by the city, outreach to Malibu artists and other tasks.

Malibu's new Cultural Arts Commission will hold its first meeting later this week.

The meeting is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26 in the community room at Malibu City Hall, according to Councilwoman Laura Zahn Rosenthal, who spearheaded the effort to bring about the commission.

Commissioners will make recommendations to the Malibu City Council on cultural arts policy, the use of city parks for arts-related events, purchases of art by the city, outreach to Malibu artists and other tasks.

Several people, who live within and outside the Malibu city limits, applied to be on the commission.

Mayor Lou La Monte appointed Suzanne Zimmer; Councilwoman Laura Zahn Rosenthal appointed actor Daniel Stern; Councilman John Sibert appointed Scott Hosfeld; and the council appointed Graeme Clifford as ex-officio member. In addition, Mayor Pro Tem Joan House appointed Eric Myer and Councilman Skylar Peak appointed Richard Gibbs.

The commissioners will serve a four-year term.

Zimmer previously served as a member of Malibu View Protection Task Force from September 2008-09 and as a member of the Library, Task Force from fall 2011 to April 2012.

Stern, who served as the chairman of the Arts Task Force for the City of Malibu, is also founder and president Malibu Boys and Girls Club and a teacher of the Media Literacy Program at Malibu High School.

Stern has also been an actor in film, theater and television since 1977. He is best known for his roles in City Slickers, the first two Home Alone movies.

Hosfeld serves as music director and conductor of the Malibu Coast Chamber Orchestra and executive director of the Malibu Friends of Music. He is also a violinist and violist in the film and television industry.

Clifford, who is an Australian film director, is a board member of the Malibu Stage Company and a current member of the Malibu Parks and Recreation Commission. 

Myer is a Malibu-based photographer. Gibbs is a composer and producer.
