Why Go: The lineup includes the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station’s traffic safety display featuring a totaled car as well as videos and other interactive features to educate young people; dedication of bench to Emily Shane and screening of “Sixteen Candles.”

Where/When: , 29243 Pacific Coast Highway; Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m.
Why Go: Opening weekend of the Peter Quilter comedy about a married couple and their different rates of success as aging actors. Who knows better about a night at the Oscars than Malibu residents?

3. Pepperdine Men’s Basketball vs. Gonzaga
Where/When: Firestone Fieldhouse, 24255 Pacific Coast Highway; Saturday at 7 p.m.
Why Go: The excitement of the big rivalry game has lost a little luster because Gonzaga is not playing this season like the powerhouse it had been for more than a decade. But this could mean Pepperdine has a good chance to win. The atmosphere is always festive during this game.

Why Go: Malibu Film Society hosts the final local screening this year of the movie several experts expect to win the best picture Oscar. An audience Q+A session with Malibu cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth follows.

Where/When: , 30128 Morning View Drive; Sunday from 3 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Why Go: Children ages 4 and up get watched by youth group members with adult supervision while parents and/or guardians get some time off to make it date time. Pizza, drinks (everybody should bring a side dish to share), movies, games and crafts are included
