Great White Shark Activity Reported Near Malibu Beach
Someone reported a great white shark about 400 yards offshore from a SoCal beach.
MALIBU, CA — A great white shark was reported off the coast of a Southern California beach, state park officials announced this week.
The shark sighting was reported about 9:30 a.m. Sunday off County Line Beach in Malibu, near Ventura County, according to the Leo Carrillo State Parks officials via Instagram. No injuries were reported.

State Parks officials confirmed the "shark sighting of an approximately 15’ possible Great White which was displaying non-active behavior. The shark was seen approximately 400 yards offshore from County Line Beach."
Now, officials are warning people.

"Due to the recent report of a shark sighting and activity near Leo Carrillo State Park and out of caution for safety, California State Parks will be posting advisory signs for “Shark Activity” near County Line Beach to advise beachgoers to use caution when swimming," officials said.
So far, the sighting and activity was away from swimmers and considered non-active, officials said.
State beaches will remain open.
"State lifeguards are on heightened awareness and they are following the California Marine Safety Chiefs Association Shark Sighting and Incident Response Guidelines," officials said.
Lifeguards will monitor the water for shark activity.
In Southern California, coastal waters are a known nursery habitat for great white sharks, according to the California State University, Long Beach - Shark Lab. The lab studies the physiological and behavioral ecology of marine animals and the effect of human activity on the ocean.
"Lifeguards will continue to follow best available public safety practices and work with the CSULB Shark Lab and California Marine Safety Chiefs Association," officials said.

Most shark encounters are non-fatal, however, in 1989 a kayaker died after a great white shark attacked the victim near Latigo Point and Paradise Cove.
In June, a kayaker was attacked by a shark near Parson's Landing at Catalina Island and airlifted to a trauma center. The victim, who was a participant at a Boy Scout Camp in Emerald Bay, was in stable condition underwent surgery, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
