Malibu City Council, School Board Election: Filing Period Nears

Malibu will elect two City Council seats and four school district board members come November 8.

MALIBU, CA — And they're off. Election season is just kicking off in Malibu as the city prepares to elect two City Councilmembers on Nov. 8.

The filing period for the city council race begins Monday and will run through Aug. 12. During this period, candidates will need to submit their nomination documents and candidate statements.

Two council members have terms ending in 2022: Karen Farrer and Mikke Pierson.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old that is registered to vote and a resident of the city of Malibu to run for city council.

Malibu residents will weigh in on a number of local elections affecting the city including three seats on the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District and Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. For the water district, Lynda Lo-Hill, Lee Renger and Jay Lewitt all have terms ending. Learn more about the water district board here.

On the SMMUSD Board of education, Keith Coleman, Craig Foster, Laurie Lieberman and Richard Tahvildaran-Jesswein have terms expiring.

New Malibu voters will need to register to vote by Oct. 24 using this link. All registered voters will be automatically sent a mail-in ballot, and Los Angeles County will start mailing ballots on Oct. 10.
