Malibu To Host Surf Gear Swap To Reduce Waste, Plastic Pollution
Come buy, sell, trade or donate surfboards, boogie boards & other beach-related items. Proceeds will go toward the Malibu Sharks Surf Team.
MALIBU, CA — The City of Malibu and the Harry Barovsky Memorial Youth Commission are hosting the Malibu Surf Swap on Saturday, August 3, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Malibu City Hall. At the event, attendees can buy, sell, trade or donate surfboards, SUPs, boogie boards, wetsuits and other beach-related items, and proceeds will benefit the middle and high school athletes on the Malibu Sharks Surf Team, the City of Malibu press release said.
"Malibu is committed to protecting the environment and is one of the world's greatest surf cities, so let's all help reduce waste and plastic pollution and keep those used surfboards and wetsuits out of the landfill while supporting our community’s young surf athletes," said Mayor Jefferson "Zuma Jay" Wagner.
The event evolved out of "Stokefest," a surf gear swap that some community members started shortly after the Woolsey Fire, the City said. Surfing and enjoying the beach are a central part of life in Malibu, and many residents lost everything — including surfing and beach gear —in the Woolsey Fire.

Admission is free; vendor booths are $25 for a 10 ft. by 10 ft. space, and anyone who trades merchandise is asked to pay $10 to the organizer. Vendors and traders are asked to pay in cash.
"The event organizers thought that if people could be able to get back to those activities that bring them joy, exercise and peace, it would offer a valuable way to heal and recover," the City said. "By bringing people together to help their neighbors, the event also promoted community bonding."
