Malibu Offers Battery Recycling At City Hall

In the state of California, it is illegal to throw any type of battery in the regular trash.

MALIBU, CA -– As part of its Earth Month activities, the city of Malibu is encouraging residents to recycle more by installing new battery recycling bins at City Hall. The bins will be installed on Tuesday, April 18 to offer Malibu residents the opportunity to have their household batteries safely and responsibly recycled in order to protect the environment.

“Battery recycling keeps highly toxic materials out of the environment and saves natural resources,” mayor Lou La Monte said. “By offering residents the chance to conveniently recycle batteries, the city of Malibu continues to demonstrate our strong commitment to environmental protection.”

In the state of California, it is illegal to throw any type of battery in the regular trash. Billions of household batteries are consumed every year in the United States. When they end up in landfills, they can leach toxic chemicals into the environment, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. A combination of legislation and industry initiatives has made it possible to recycle most batteries.

Malibu residents already can drop off discarded batteries at the city's bi-monthly e-waste and household hazardous waste collection events. The new battery collection bins will be located on the first- and second-floor lobbies of City Hall, 23825 Stuart Ranch Road, and will allow residents to drop off batteries for recycling anytime City Hall is open.

Once batteries are dead, both ends or contacts of the battery should be covered with any type of tape to avoid leakage and fires while they are stored before bringing them to the battery disposal bins at City Hall. All household alkaline and rechargeable batteries are accepted. Automotive and motorcycle batteries, however, are not accepted but can be dropped off at the city’s bi-monthly oil e-waste and household hazardous waste collection events.
