Malibu To Screen Environmental Documentary On World Oceans Day

The film, "A Plastic Ocean" exposes the grave damage that plastic pollution is causing on marine wildlife, ecosystems and people.

MALIBU, CA — For a city with 21 miles of coastline, Malibu has a vested interest in keeping the ocean clean. The city is teaming up with the Plastic Oceans Foundation to host a screening of the environmental documentary, “A Plastic Ocean.”

The screening will be held on World Oceans Day on Thursday, June 8, at 7 p.m. in Malibu City Hall's Civic Theater.

“Here in Malibu, the ocean is a part of daily life, so we have a strong interest in keeping it healthy and beautiful,” Mayor Skylar Peak said. “This film demonstrates the severity of the threat posed by plastic pollution, something that we are working to address with legislation limiting the use of plastic in the City.”

The city has taken measures to reduce plastic pollution including polystyrene foam and plastic bag bans, promoting recycling by businesses and residents, holding regular public recycling collection events, and curtailing the use of plastic cutlery, plates, bottles and cups at City Hall.

“A Plastic Ocean” follows the journey of two explorers as they travel to some of the most remote parts of the world to expose the grave damage that plastic pollution is causing on marine wildlife, ecosystems and people.

The film is directed by Craig Leeson, an award-winning journalist, filmmaker and television presenter whose work has appeared on BBC, CNN, National Geographic Channel, Bloomberg and PBS.

It documents the newest science, proving how plastics, once they enter the oceans, break up into small particulates that enter the food chain where they attract toxins like a magnet. These toxins are stored in the fatty tissues of fish and are eventually consumed by people.

Plastic Oceans Foundation is a UK-based charitable organization that aims to change the world’s attitude to plastic and reduce the demand for non-essential plastic.

There is a suggested $25 donation with all proceeds from the event benefiting Plastic Oceans Foundation. Ticket sales end June 8.
