Malibu to Celebrate Chumash Heritage

Hundreds of Native Americans, representing tribes from all over California and the rest of the country, will wear colorful regalia while they dance in a sacred circle in Malibu.

The city of Malibu will host its 15th annual Chumash Day Powwow and Intertribal Gathering in honor of the Chumash, Malibu's original settlers.

The two-day event will take place at Malibu Bluffs Park, 24250 Pacific Coast Highway on Saturday, April 13 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Chumash Day Powwow and Intertribal Gathering will kick off with gourd dancers and the Chumash Inter-Tribal Singers, followed by opening ceremonies at 1 p.m., according to Olivia Damavandi, Malibu's media information officer.

Both days of the event will feature Chumash history storytelling and special flute making demonstrations.

Admission and parking for the event are free, with parking located along both sides of Malibu Canyon Road and on Civic Center Way. The city will provide a free shuttle bus on both days.
