MALIBU, CA — Due to fire risk, some Malibu residents may be expected to meet stricter brush clearance requirements, the city announced Tuesday.

All of Malibu is deemed a very high fire severity zone by Cal Fire, along with most of its neighbors. Given continued risk, many residents will receive brush clearance notices from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, according to the city of Malibu.

Notices will be sent to 5,600 homes, over thousand more residents than in previous years, which will include all Malibu properties under Cal Fire's purview. Previously, notices were only sent to homes "deemed most vulnerable by visual inspection or historical fire data."

The notices are part of California's enforcement of a new law that requires the "removal of all flammable materials within five feet of any structure," enforceable through inspections from local fire enforcement.
