Over 5,000 Athletes, Celebrities Compete In Annual Malibu Triathlon

MALIBU, CA — Over 5,000 participants put their stamina to the test over the weekend at the 37th annual 2XU Malibu Triathlon.

Saturday and Sunday's events raised over $1 million for the Los Angeles' Pediatric Cancer Research Program, according to a Malibu Triathlon news release.

Athletes took on two different challenges to benefit the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. The Olympic distance relay and solo races will kick off at 7 a.m Saturday, with the "Classic Distance" races following at 7 a.m. Sunday. The Olympic race includes a 1.5 kilometer swim, a 40 kilometer bike ride and a 10 kilometer run. The "Classic Distance" includes a 0.5 mile swim, 17 mile bike ride and a four mile run.

In true Los Angeles style, a number of celebrities competed in a celebrity division. Home Economics' star Karla Souza finished first in the women's category with a 2:11:26 finish time, and model Parker Gregory took the men's division with a time of 1:48:19, according to a news release from the 2XU Malibu Triathlon.

Bachelor star and podcast host Nick Viall took the celebrity relay race alongside Super League Triathlon pros on their relay team, Team Don't Text Your Ex Happy Birthday — a tribute to Viall's book.

Other competing celebrities included actors Max Greenfield, Mark Feuerstein and Rob Riggle.

Kiah Wheeler and Nicholas Chase won the Classic Triathlon's men's and women's divisions with times of 1:36:24 and 1:15:23, respectively. Mirka Murillo and Jim Lubinski won the Olympic races with times of 1:57:52 and 2:07:48, respectively.

The Malibu festivities also included the third race int the Super League Triathlon's 2022 Global Championship Series, during which 40 professional athletes continued their fight for the prestigious title. The next two races will take place in France and Saudi Arabia.

"This is our second year at 2XU Malibu Triathlon and it’s one of the most iconic backdrops to hold our events," said Michael D'hulst, CEO and Co-Founder of Super League Triathlon. "Our goal is to highlight on the ground and through our global broadcast the excitement around shorter distance racing and the incredible agility of triathletes. Our Championship Series is exciting not just for the athletes but for spectators as well.”

Each year, the race benefits Children's Hospital Los Angeles. To date, the race has raised over $17 million for Children's Hospital Los Angeles, according to a Super League Triathlon representative.
