PHOTOS: Malibu Lagoon Shade Structure Installed
All work on the Malibu Lagoon Project is expected to be complete in time for the grand opening ceremony, which is set for May 3.
One of the final pieces of the Malibu Lagoon Project, a metal shade structure, was installed Wednesday.
The awning, which will be painted olive green soon, covers an outdoor classroom where students will be introduced to the Malibu Lagoon, according to Mark Abramson, Senior Watershed Advisor for the Santa Monica Restoration Foundation.
Project opponents criticized the initial plans for the shade structure because they did not believe it would look natural.

Contractors are still waiting to install a fountain, which is still being worked on by an artist in Arizona, Abramson said.
All the work is expected to be completed in time for a May 3 grand opening.
