Rare Risso Dolphin Washed Ashore North of Malibu

It was first thought to be a whale. Risso dolphins can get up to 1,000 pounds.

What was first thought to be a dead whale beached just north of Malibu is a rare Risso dolphin, a newspaper reported.

The Ventura County Star reports that carcass was first discovered around 10 a.m. Saturday, and was first thought to be a whale.

However, an official with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirmed it was a Risso dolphin, which can get up to 1,000 pounds.
