
A 10-year-old boy hit by a car was one of the 18 service calls the Manhattan Beach Fire Department responded to on the Fourth of July, said Ken Shuck, battalion chief.
The boy was struck at Highland Avenue and 27th Street, he said, and was transported to a trauma center per protocol. Shuck said the boy "appeared stable."
Other service calls, between 12 noon and 10 p.m. on the Fourth included six that were drug or alcohol related, including one at Metlox Plaza around 12:30 p.m. for a reported young intoxicated female, who was transported to a hospital. Business owners and members of the public called in the report of the young woman.

Here's a list of the remaining calls:
- 1 vehicle accident
- 5 Emergency Medical Service
- 1 investigation for a large party on the roof of a house on The Strand
- 2 reported structure fires (1 was a smoke scare from fireworks; the other a rubbish fire next to a home)
- 1 public assist to retrieve a wallet floating in Polliwog Park pond
- 1 false alarm at a senior housing facility

On Friday, the fire department responded to 10 requests for service; Saturday, to 9 and on Sunday, as of 10:15 p.m., 12, five of which were calls for EMS at the Chevron Manhattan Beach Grand Prix bike races, said Shuck.
Two Grand Prix racers were taken to the hospital, including one who went to the trauma center in stable condition.
