Manhattan Beach: Jr. Lifeguard Prep, Water Aerobics At Begg Pool

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — Water aerobics and preparation for the Jr. Lifeguard program are two of the Fall Aquatics programs starting at Begg Pool on Monday, August 31. Registration for these classes and programs is open online now.

Offered by the Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department, the water aerobics classes and Jr. Lifeguard Prep program run through Dec. 17. Anyone ages 16 and older may take a water aerobics class; kids from 9 to 14 years of age may take the Jr. Lifeguard Prep program.

The Jr. Lifeguard Prep class helps youths train to meet the 100-yard freestyle swim qualification to join the Los Angeles County Jr. Lifeguard Program. The class focuses primarily on the freestyle swim technique, according to the registration page online. A listed "prerequisite" says participants "Must be 9 years old before July 1, 2021" and must be able to swim 50 yards freestyle nonstop on the first day of class.

Water aerobics is open to men and women to help them "improve muscular endurance, core strength, and flexibility" in this low-impact workout that includes aerobic, stretching and relaxation exercises. you do not need to know how to swim to participate, according to the registration page online.

Begg Pool has been open this summer for lap swimming, recreational hours, and the masters swim program. Registration is only available online; walk-ups and phone call registration is not allowed. Begg Pool is operating under new protocols and practices due to COVID-19 and require social distancing, wearing a face-covering except when in the pool. The shower and locker rooms are currently closed.
