Manhattan Beach School Has Area Schools' First Case of Enterovirus D68

A case has been diagnosed in a student who attends Pennekamp Elementary School and another who attends next door in Hermosa Beach.

Students at two local schools have been diagnosed with Enterovirus D68, a respiratory illness that can require hospitalization in children with compromised respiratory systems.

According to a letter from Montessori of Manhattan Beach, the two schools are Hermosa View Elementary School and Pennekamp Elementary School in Manhattan Beach.

Doctors say symptoms of Enterovirus D68 often mimic that of a cold.

Dear Parents and Staff,

The information contained in this email is PRECAUTIONARY and PROACTIVE only. This morning a parent presented to the staff at View School a physician’s diagnois stating that their child has contracted Enterovirus D68.

Thank you to this parent who sought medical treatment for their child and contacted the school immediately with the diagnosis. Due to privacy laws, no further information regarding the student or classroom will be provided.

This is the first reported case of Enterovirus D68 that has been reported in the district. Contact has been made with the Center for Disease Control by the district nurse. Guidelines were provided that are listed below. If you have any concerns or your child has exhibited any of these symptoms, please contact your personal physician.

Based on your physician’s recommendation, please notify the school office with any relevant information regarding your child’s health.
