Marina Del Rey Rep. Ted Lieu Says A.G. Jeff Sessions Needs To Resign Immediately

MARINA DEL REY, CA -- Marina Del Rey Democratic Congressman Ted Lieu on Thursday called for the resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions after the latter made false statements about interactions with Russian officials during his confirmation hearings.

Sessions recused himself Thursday afternoon from the Department of Justice's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The attorney general maintained that his testimony to the Senate was "honest and correct as I understood it at the time." He, however, decided to recuse himself from any further investigations into Donald Trump's presidential campaign and its possible ties to Russia after conferring with aides, he said.

Lieu, however, said Sessions needs to resigned because the story about his interactions with Russian officials keeps on changing. He is also calling for a special prosecutor to conduct independent investigations into the Trump administration's alleged ties to Russia and into Sessions' false testimony to Congress.

“America, we have a problem. In less than two months, two senior Trump administration officials have been caught red-handed making false statements about their contacts with high-ranking officials of the Russian government," he said. "The duplicity on the part of Mike Flynn and now on the part of Attorney General Sessions underscores the absolute necessity for independent investigations."

Lieu said Sessions has broken the trust of the American people by lying to Congress.

"As a Member of the House Judiciary Committee with oversight over the Department of Justice, I can no longer trust our Attorney General. Jeff Sessions must tender his resignation immediately," he said.
