Sunny Afternoon, Third Pirate Sentenced and Rosendahl's Manzanar Trip

The National Weather Service says we can expect a sunny afternoon today, but two storms are moving into the region and likely will bring some rain.

Today is Oct. 3. It is the 276th day of the year. We are under a waxing crescent moon. Sunset will occur about 6:37 p.m. Here are five things to know:

1. The National Weather Service forecast for this afternoon calls for sunny skies with a high near 71 degrees with a chance of drizzle after 11 p.m. and an overnight low around 60 degrees. Forecasters says there's a chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday morning with a partly cloudy afternoon and a high near 66 degrees.

In a special weather statement, the National Weather Service says two early season storms are moving into California and the first is expected to bring some light rain into the region Tuesday, with a chance that it could strengthen and bring higher rainfall amounts. A second, stronger storm is expected to bring widespread rainfall to southwest California on Wednesday with a four- to six-hour period of steady rainfall and potentaily produce between a half inch and an inch of rain across the region.

2. A third Somali pirate was sentenced to life in prison today for the February hijacking of a yacht off the coast of Somalia in February in which four Americans were killed, including Del Rey Yacht Club members Jean and Scott Adam. A fourth pirate also was scheduled to be sentenced to life in prison today and two more were expected to be sentenced Tuesday, said Peter Carr, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of Virginia. Check back here later for more details.

3. Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl, whose 11th District includes Playa del Rey and Del Rey, recently joined a group of constituents for a trip to Manzanar, the high-desert site where more than 110,000 Japanese Americans were imprisoned during World War II. Rosendahl talks about his experience in this exclusive Patch video blog. Watch it right here.

4. Our Pet of the Week is Mila, a Tibetan Spaniel/Pomeranian mix who waited for three months to be rescued from the pound. Learn more about this little lady right here.

5. Patch is looking for bloggers. We recently rolled out a new blogging platform and are looking for local bloggers to write about whatever they want, whenever they want. If you're interested or want to learn more, send me an email: Paul.Chavez@patch.com.
