Application Period Open For District Attorney Spring Community Academy

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — The application period is open for the Spring 2024 Community Academy, Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton announced Wednesday.

The free, 10-week course is held at the District Attorney’s Office in downtown Martinez. It takes place from 6 p.m.-8:30 p.m. every Wednesday starting Feb. 21.

"When we started the Community Academy in 2019, the goal was to create a curriculum based on openness and transparency," District Attorney Becton said. "The learning experience we designed does that by giving community members the chance to hear not only from me, but also the Public Defender, Superior Court, line prosecutors, and Police Chiefs. This year, we’re excited that college students — who will receive college credit — will be among the mix of Community Academy participants. This unique educational experience benefits all participants by fostering stronger community relations about important public agencies."

District attorneys play an important role in the criminal justice system. Not only are they in charge of prosecuting criminal cases on behalf of the People of California, but they also manage an office of deputy district attorneys, investigators, victim witness advocates, law clerks, administrative assistants and case prep analysts.

Moreover, prosecutors review police investigations, make charging decisions, prepare for trial, and negotiate settlements. This is all part of the District Attorney’s role in enforcing the laws crafted by the legislative branch and implemented by the executive branch of the state government.

Participants in the academy will learn about these and other aspects of the District Attorney’s Office. They will also get the opportunity to meet with a Superior Court judge as part of a court tour; visit the Martinez Detention Facility; and understand how the District Attorney’s Office has various community outreach programs for victims, children and parents.
