Contra Costa County Librarian's Message For November 2023

Librarian Alison McKee on plans for the new Bay Point Library, which will be the first brand-new library built in the county since 1961.

Alison McKee was selected for the county librarian role in February 2021 when the libraries were still closed by the coronavirus pandemic. Prior to that, she was the interim county librarian. McKee has worked within the county's library system since 2002.

I am thrilled to share that the Library has received $9.9 million in grant funding from the State Library for construction of the new Bay Point Library. The new library will be built as part of a development near the Pittsburg-Bay Point BART station that will include low-income housing, retail space, and a 21,000-square-foot library.

The new library will be a modern, state-of-the-art facility complete with services and materials for people of all ages. It will offer after-school activities, free internet and computer access, and community meeting rooms. Construction is scheduled to start next year, and the new library is expected to open in early 2027.

The library will be the first brand-new library built in Contra Costa County since 1961. The current library in Bay Point is located on the Riverview Middle School campus and shares space with the school library. The existing 4,000-square-foot space was built in 1956 and lacks the necessary power and data infrastructure to support the technological needs of a modern library. Because the library is on a school campus, it can’t be open to the public when school is in session and so has very limited hours of service.

The grant money comes from the California State Library’s Building Forward Library Facilities Improvement Program. The award requires a 50 percent match from the Library, which will come from a portion of the $10 million the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors designated for the Bay Point Library project in the 2023-24 budget.

Within the next several months, we will hold a series of community meetings in Bay Point to get input from Bay Point residents about their needs and priorities. We are looking forward to working with the community to create a beautiful new library that they can be proud of and will serve them for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Alison McKee
County Librarian

Atentamente,

Alison McKee
Bibliotecaria del Condado
