Cooper Poised To Be Named Contra Costa County Clerk-Recorder
Deborah Cooper's formal appointment to the role vacated by Joe Canciamilla is pending criminal background and social media checks.
MARTINEZ, CA — Deborah Cooper, Contra Costa County's acting clerk-recorder, could be named Tuesday to officially fill out the remaining three years of Joe Canciamilla's term. After the county's Board of Supervisors selected Cooper from among five finalists for the job the supervisors interviewed on Jan. 21, the supervisors asked for a criminal background check and a social media check on Cooper.
A county staff report indicates nothing of concern was uncovered during either check. Cooper has been acting clerk-recorder since Nov. 1, shortly after the abrupt resignation of Canciamilla, who was finishing his first year of a second four-year elected term.
About a week after he resigned, Canciamilla reached a settlement with the state Fair Political Practices Commission on 30 counts of campaign finance violations including using $130,529 in campaign funds for personal expenses and for filing falsified records to cover it up.

The Board of Supervisors meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the supervisors' chambers on the first floor of 651 Pine St. in downtown Martinez.
