County Workers Rally To Protest What They Call Unjust Treatment
A coalition of labor groups, now in contract negotiations, say two years of pay and benefit cuts are enough.

By Bay City News Service
Contra Costa County workers rallied throughout the countyΒ today to protest what they call unjust treatment and to demand fair wages andΒ benefits.
The unionized workers are part of the Contra Costa County LaborΒ Coalition, which organizers say represents some of the county's lowest-paidworkers, from custodians and health care workers to engineers and animal careΒ services personnel.
Union officials said that over the last two years, the workersΒ have taken benefit and pay cuts, while other county workers have not beenΒ asked to contribute more to their health plans.
Now in the midst of contract negotiations, the labor coalitionΒ said county proposals to cut the workers' pay and benefits further withoutΒ asking other county workers to accept the same reductions is unfair andΒ unreasonable.
"We have made sacrifices and we are willing to make additionalΒ sacrifices, but they have to be fair and equitable across the countyΒ workforce," labor coalition chairman Felix Huerta said today. "We haveΒ historically always reached an agreement with the county and we will reach anΒ agreement again ... but we don't want to be treated like second-classΒ citizens."
A county spokeswoman was not immediately available for commentΒ this morning.
Rallies and marches were held throughout the day atΒ the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Maritnez, county employment and human services department in Antioch,Β the Pittsburg HealthΒ Center, and the Richmond Health Center.
