MARTINEZ, CA — Martinez Unified School District will ask its area 3 voters to select a new school board member on June 17.

Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools Lynn Mackey decided last week that a petition calling for the special election was legally sufficient. The district will conduct the election by mail.

The petition terminates the provisional appointment of Brittany Ayala, who was installed in the position by the district's governing board.

The position was previously held by Yazmin Llamas before she was elected to the Contra Costa County Board of Education. The board will continue with four members until the election.

"The petitioners have met the criteria for a special election to be called," Mackey said in a statement. "It is my hope the voters of that area mail in their ballots for their school board representative."

The petition needed signatures from 1.5% of the 4,182 registered voters in area 3. Of the 135 signatures submitted, the Contra Costa County Clerk-Recorder-Elections Department verified 126, surpassing the necessary 63.

People interested in the position must submit their candidacy papers by 5 p.m. on March 21. Filing instructions can be found at the Contra Costa County Clerk-Recorder-Elections website.
