Atherton Police Officers' Association Drops Union

The Atherton Police Officers' Association announced this week it is no longer affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

“We are joining the San Mateo County Deputy Sheriff’s Association as associate members and retaining the law firm Mastagni, Holstedt, Amick, Miller and Johnsen,” said John Mattes, who is the vice president of the APOA.

The SMC Deputy Sheriff's Association represents more than 400 law enforcement officials in the county, according to its website.  

As a result of this disassociation with the Teamsters, the Atherton Police will eliminate negative perceptions about the force and improve their chances of a favorable outcome during upcoming labor contract negotiation with the City of Atherton. The police department’s relationship with the Teamsters was a point of contention during the 2012 election, causing some to speculate about the law enforcement department’s integrity. 

The city of Atherton employs 22 police officers, according to the city’s 2012-2013 budget. The police department’s current memorandum of understanding that outlines the benefits given to the officers will expire on September 30, 2013.
