The dog's name is Gert. And the men in the Chevy were in for a world of hurt. Legally speaking.
Menlo Park Police were answering a 911 call about a suspicious car parked on Harvard Avenue on Tuesday. Three men were inside the vehicle, which did not have license plates, according to District Attorney records. Officers approached the vehicle, ran its occupants' IDs through the system, and discovered that one of the men, Antonio Lydell Jones, 32, had two warrants in Santa Clara County.
Police officers tried to arrest him and he bolted, dropping a cocaine pipe in the process, according to Officers Shaw and Byars. When the man did not stop, they released the hound. The police canine named “Gert” leaped into action, stopped Lydell Jones on El Camino and held onto him until officers arrived to take him into custody.
Jones pleaded not guilty and his preliminary hearing is set for June 13. He remains in custody with bail set at $75,000.
