Car Collides With Dog in Atherton

Accident at intersection of El Camino Real and Atherton Avenue leaves one animal injured.

A white sedan collided with a dog in Atherton, California Wednesday morning, leaving nearby residents concerned that someone had died.

Patch readers alerted us to the situation and asked us if we knew more details.  Here’s what we learned from Atherton Police.

Two dogs were running loose in Atherton at the intersection of El Camino Real and Atherton Avenue.  A homeowner saw them and tried to “secure the animals,” so he could return them to their owner, said Chris Vigil, Atherton Police Spokesperson.

In the middle of the chase, one of the dogs ran into the street and was hit by a white sedan.  The vehicle driver stopped and called 9-1-1.  Atherton Police officers were dispatched to the scene.

The 52-year old Atherton resident who was trying to catch the animals attempted to get the dog out of the middle of the road.

The injured animal was scared and bit him, Vigil said.  The dog’s owner was notified. They retrieved the injured animal and took it to a nearby veterinarian for emergency care.  Both the homeowner and the animals are expected to be okay.  No criminal charges were filed.
