Car Takes Flight After Impact

Police suspect a medical emergency led to the accident.

An Atherton man is in the hospital today after his car crashed into a tree near downtown Palo Alto Thursday night, police said. Officers responded to reports of a major accident at the intersection of Middlefield Road and Hamilton Avenue around 8:10 p.m. and found the injured man alone in his car, according to police.

The man, who is in his 60s, sustained moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital by paramedics and the Palo Alto Fire Department, police said. The car was traveling north on Middlefield Road toward Hamilton Avenue when it apparently drifted into the southbound lanes and onto the sidewalk, hit a concrete planter, became airborne and struck a tree, according to police.

Police said they do not believe that alcohol or drugs were a factor. Instead, they said the driver may have had a medical emergency that led to the crash. The man was in serious but stable condition today, according to police.
