MENLO PARK, CA — Menlo Park police officers will deploy later this month to staff a DUI checkpoint to screen drivers for signs of intoxication.

The police department will staff the checkpoint on Dec. 14 along southbound Middlefield Road from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. The location was chosen based on data showing previous crashes involving impaired driving, officials said.

Police reminded drivers that impairment can come from sources other than alcohol, including marijuana and certain prescriptions or over-the-counter medications. Drivers convicted of a first-time DUI can expect to pay more than $13,000 in fines and penalties, in addition to having their license suspended.
