Getting Alameda De Las Pulgas Into The Network

The Menlo Park Bicycle Commission unanimously voted Monday night to recommend that San Mateo County incorporate Alameda De Las Pulgas into its comprehensive bicycle and pedestrian plan. But the question of whether the city could align its vision with the county’s was raised.

Menlo Park resident Steve Schmidt said during the public comment section of the meeting that the road should have been included already.

“It’s a glaring omission,” Schmidt said, testifying that the road is a major route for people who commute on their bikes north and south through the Peninsula.

“This should be designated as a priority project,” he said. 

Last December, Alameda De Las Pulgas was identified by the Bicycle Commission one of the roads in Menlo Park that should be included in the countywide bike network. It is not in the list of 15 projects that the county identified as areas which should be given priority over others in the February 24, 2011 version of the plan.

Randolph Craig, Menlo Park City Staff Liaison to the Bicycle Commission, said that it was not clear whether a change to the county plan was possible at this point.

"But at least it's on paper, so I can go to management and see if it has to go to council."
