“Guinea fowl are known as the ‘guard dogs’ in the pet poultry world”, said PHS spokesperson Buffy Martin Tarbox. “We currently have seven guinea fowl available for adoption, but only for people who will commit to keeping them as pets and not to harvest them for meat.”

Guinea fowl can be housed in a set up similar to chicken coops. They love to perch on high places and unlike chickens they are less destructive since they don’t typically dig or scratch like chickens are known to do. They also serve as excellent pest control since they love to snack on insects, especially ticks.

The guinea fowl arrived at the shelter as strays and do not need to be adopted together as one group.

For adopters interested in meeting the guinea fowl please call 650-340-7022. Adoption fees for each guinea fowl will be half off the normal fee.
