SamTrans to Test New Fare Boxes on Buses

New payment system will be tested for the next month in San Mateo County.

The San Mateo County Transit District today is beginning to test new fare boxes on its buses.

The fare boxes, which will be tried out on five buses for approximately four weeks, are designed to accept cash, coins, tokens, paper tickets and paper magnetic-stripe tickets, SamTrans spokeswoman Tasha Bartholomew said.

If the testing process runs smoothly, the fare boxes will be installed on 322 SamTrans buses by June 1.
