School Board Hires Two New Principals

Vote conducted in about eight minutes.

New Menlo Park City School District Superintendent placed two new principals into the school system Tuesday, a process that will alter the district’s sociopolitical landscape starting June 1st.

The district’s approved Ghysels' personnel selections in a lighthearted fashion that exemplified the sentiment felt about the individuals being presented to them.

“Usually we start with a celebration of children or other programs,” said , school board president. “Tonight we are celebrating our newest family members,” she said.  

Superintendent Ghysels presented two candidates to the school board and the more than 30 teachers and education policy administrators who attended Tuesday’s board meeting.

He chose for the position of  Principal. He described her as “well traveled and very experienced as a principal,” noting that she is a graduate of Mountain View Whisman School District's leadership academy.

Burns' husband Steven, son Jack, and Jack’s yellow truck observed the process from the sidelines. 

For the position of  Principal, Ghysels chose . Ghysels described him as “bilingual,” highlighting that he has spent time in Peru. Burmeister’s wife Elisa was in the audience.

The board made two motions to approve the two in what may be the most rapid vote in the history of MPCSD Board meetings, outside of a consent agenda. No discussion of the matter was held during the meeting.

Board member motioned to approve Burns’ contract, with seconding it. The approval was unanimous and met with raucous applause.

Thygesen motioned to approve Burmeister’s contract, with seconding it. This employment contract was also unanimously approved without discussion.

The entire process took about eight minutes. The new principals begin employment on July 1, 2012.
