Surf and Turf Dinner Benefit for Cancer Foundation

The Strides for Life Colon Cancer Foundation will hold its 8th Annual Dinner Dance and Auction on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo.

This Dinner is held in memory of Dylan Lawrence Cappel who died of colon cancer at the early age of 23.  Dylan graduated from Serra in 1996 and then completed his education at the University of Wisconsin.  He was a champion rower, and attended college on a rowing scholarship.

The Foundation, founded in 2004 to honor Dylan,  has provided over $500,000 of free health care services to individuals in the Bay Area.   Last year, the Foundation funded $185,000 in free colon cancer screening services to uninsured people in need.  The Foundation also provides education and advocacy to patients as well as colon cancer information to healthcare providers and the public.

Colon Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. Ayde Vogl, Strides for Life Executive Director states:  “Detecting a potential cancer in advance allows for treatment and cure in many cases.  In fact, colon cancer should boast a 90% cure rate if the disease is detected in its earliest stages.  The mission of Strides for Life is to save lives through prevention and early detection.”

The dinner is one of two major fundraisers for Strides for Life each year.  The Foundation depends entirely on voluntary contributions and grants.
