Recent Project Milestones
Construction activities south of Whipple Avenue Nearly Complete: Caltrans and their contractor team, led by Kiewit, has nearly completed the first phase of the two-phase project to add 22 miles of express lanes to U.S. 101 in San Mateo County. They are finalizing the conversion of the HOV lane, south of Whipple Avenue, into an express lane by adding signage, lighting, new electronic tolling equipment, and pavement markings to the freeway. They also added roadside biostrips and trash capture devices to keep pollution out of the San Francisco Bay. The express lanes are being tested right now and will open on February 11th.
We’re increasing visibility during construction! At the request of drivers, Caltrans has recently installed new reflective markers between the freeway lanes on both sides of U.S. 101 from approximately Millbrae Avenue in Millbrae to Produce Avenue in South San Francisco. The temporary markers increase visibility of current lane markings for drivers during early morning and late evening times. These temporary markers will be replaced with reflective paint as weather allows.
