July Parks and Recreation Month in Millbrae
Millbrae City Council members are encouraging residents to get out and enjoy the parks this summer.
With the promise of warmer weather and summer sun, the Millbrae City Council has proclaimed July 2012 as Parks and Recreation Month.
According to the proclamation, which will be read at Tuesday night's Council meeting, 98 percent of California households reported visiting a park in the past year at least once.
Millbrae boasts 13 parks for recreational use by residents and visitors.

This proclamation comes at a time when many state park closures are looming. However, just as the City Council acknowledged the importance of parks in its dedication of July at Parks & Recreation month, three leading Bay Area conservation organizations – Peninsula Open Space Trust, Portola and Castle Rock Foundation and Save the Redwoods League – have joined forces to help keep Portola Redwoods State Park open.
This temporary reprieve will allow the park to remain open for the next 12 months while the nonprofit organizations work with California State Parks to develop a long-term solution and plan that would set Portola Redwoods on a path toward sustainability.Â
