Millbrae Police Department: To Be or Not to Be?

The city will hold two town-hall meetings next week.

The City of Millbrae will discuss the future of the Millbrae Police Department next week. The public is invited to attend the meetings, which will be held on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 5 at 9 a.m. in the Chetcuti Room, located at 450 Poplar Ave.

Millbrae hoped to merge the police department with San Bruno, but the cost-savings were insufficient....

On Oct. 11, city council members said they needed a breakdown of all the financial savings of outsourcing, expected to be about $167,000 per year, before they could make a decision. The council said that officers’ overtime costs were not included in the estimate.... 

Fully staffing the Millbrae Police Department with a police chief and other employees would cost the city approximately $410,000 more per year than it is currently paying.

Millbrae will become the third city in the county if it chooses to contract with the Sheriff’s Office. San Carlos was the first almost a year ago....

Millbrae Patch conducted a poll asking residents whether the city should outsource its police department or find alternative ways to fund it. About 80 percent of respondents are against outsourcing, and several people shared their thoughts on the issue....
