City Looks for a Few Good Residents
Jan. 31 deadline is fast approaching for residents interested serving on the city's boards and commissions for things like emergency preparedness, parks and rec, the library and the arts.

Do you have passion for city government and an interest in serving on one of the city of Mill Valley’s board and commissions?
The Jan. 31 deadline is fast approaching for local residents interested in serving on one of the city's subject-specific panels. There are nine open seats on local boards and commissions. Terms are for three years and begin March 1. Appointments are made by the City Council and serve without financial compensation.
Although the Planning Commission and the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee have no openings this year, each of the city’s other boards and commission has at least one. Although incumbents may reapply, incumbent status does not guarantee another term.

On the Art Commission, which oversees such popular events as the , the , , and the , longtime member John Leonard’s two terms are up. Commissioner Elisabeth Jaffe’s term on the commission is also up but she may reapply. The Art Commission’s meetings are the second Tuesday evening of every month.
On the Emergency Preparedness Commission, Jim Stephenson has served his two terms, while Ron Vidal’s first term is up. Those meetings are the second Thursday of every month at City Hall. On the Mill Valley Library Board of Trustees, both Suz Lipman and Lisa Carmel are eligible for a second term. This advisory board meets on the second Thursday evening of every month.

The Parks and Recreation Commission has three openings, with the resignation of Stephen Burke and terms ending for both Sally Shaw Baker and Joan Murray, both of whom intend to apply for a second term. The commission meets on the first Wednesday evening of each month.
Interviews will be held in early February. Applicants will receive an invitation letter in the mail after the Jan. 31 deadline with a more specific interview date. Final appointments to the city’s boards and commissions will be made at the City Council’s Feb. 21 meeting at City Hall.
