33-Year-Old Inmate Dies In Custody At Peninsula Jail: Police

Sheriff's deputies found the 33-year-old man unresponsive in his housing unit.

MILPITAS, CA — A 33-year-old man died Sunday while in custody at a Milpitas jail, police said.

At around 2:56 p.m., Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office deputies found the man unresponsive in his housing unit. Jail staff immediately began CPR until emergency responders arrived.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at 3:31 p.m.

Detectives are investigating the incident. Initial details suggest that the death was not the result of foul play or any suspicious circumstances.

The man had been in custody since Feb. 14, facing multiple charges stemming from cases handled by the San Jose Police Department.

The Sheriff’s Office is working with the District Attorney’s Office and the Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner, following standard protocol for in-custody death, to determine the cause.

Pending family notification, the man's identity has not yet been released.
