Inmate Dies After Elmwood Attack, 3 Face Murder Charges: Police

A 23-year-old man died at the hospital days after he was critically injured in an attack inside the Elmwood Correctional Facility.

MILPITAS, CA — A 23-year-old man has died from his injuries after he was brutally beaten by inmates inside the Elmwood Correctional Facility last week, according to authorities.

The man, whom investigators said was attacked inside a dormitory on Jan. 27, underwent surgery for traumatic head injuries at a Santa Clara County hospital, where he later died.

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time," Sheriff Robert Jonsen said. "This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges we face and the importance of our efforts to improve safety and support within our facilities."

According to the sheriff's office, three inmates alleged to have been responsible for the attack will face murder and torture charges. Jonsen said his office was exploring ways to enhance security and protocols to prevent future incidents inside the aging facility.

"We are taking every measure possible to prevent such incidents from happening again," he said. "We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals in our custody."

Jonsen said concurrent criminal and administrative investigations are underway and that the sheriff's office is cooperating with the Office of Correction and Law Enforcement Monitoring to review safety protocols.
