Inmate Hospitalized After Brutal Attack At Elmwood

Three inmates are accused of attempted murder and torture after an attack left a man in critical condition Monday afternoon.

MILPITAS, CA — An incarcerated person remains hospitalized in critical condition after he was beaten by three inmates inside the Elmwood Correctional Facility, according to authorities.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office said a deputy found the victim unconscious with severe injuries during a welfare check around noon Monday. Medical staff began life-saving efforts until medics arrived approximately 10 minutes later.

First responders rushed the inmate to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery for life-threatening traumatic head injuries.

The sheriff's office said a preliminary investigation determined three inmates were responsible for the attack, which happened in an open, dormitory-style space with several rows of metal bunk beds.

The three suspects were transferred to the Main Jail and face new charges that include attempted murder and torture. The sheriff's office said new information will be shared as the investigation continues.
