Man Poses As Officer During Attempted Burglary In Milpitas

As the San Jose transient tried to kick down the residents' door, he was confronted by family members and identified himself as an officer.

MILPITAS, CA -- A San Jose transient was arrested on suspicion of impersonating a police officer and attempted burglary after he tried to kick the door down and fled when approached, sending family members and officers on a high-speed footrace that ended in a nearby business complex.

The Dec. 7 incident occurred at 10:45 p.m. when Charles Whittington, 66, identified himself as a police officer as he tried to gain entry into the home on Ede Lane and was confronted by occupants. The family called Milpitas police, which within two minutes responded to a residential burglary in progress.

When Whittington ran down the street, he was chased by several other family
members along with officers, who took him into into custody several blocks away from the victim’s residence.

A search of the man revealed he was also in possession of methamphetamines and narcotic paraphernalia, and more charges as Whittington was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail.
