Milpitas Meter Reader Caught, Saved Turtle In Time

Time's up, turtle: A quick-thinking city meter reader picked up the notoriously slow-moving critter to get it out off N. Milpitas Boulevard.

MILPITAS, CA — The question begs: Why did the turtle cross the road?

Perhaps it "tried to get to the other side" knowing it would be in good, safe hands like those of city Police Officer Derek Yamamura and Milpitas Water Meter Reader Dashiell Skuse, who once had a pet turtle. The two city workers believe the turtle corralled by Skuse was a pet to someone nearby.

A quick-thinking Skuse and the officer helped rescue this turtle from the middle of North Milpitas Boulevard Tuesday.

"I can't believe he was able to cross both lanes to the median. I was nervous he was going to get hit," Skuse said. He was traveling on his route when he noticed it.

"After a brief discussion about how to use a crosswalk and looking both ways before crossing the street, the turtle was introduced to some new friends at the Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley," the police department's Facebook post read.
